Introduction

Creative and participatory research

The Binks Hub works with a range of collaborators across universities and communities.  We are keen to champion and learn from work that is interdisciplinary and utilises co-creative and arts-engaged methods.

We are beginning to develop a portfolio of research projects which we will be taking forward in the coming months and years.  Below you will find some of these projects, alongside examples of past and present projects which showcase the kind of methods and approaches we are interested in exploring.

Areas of research vary, but all projects are seeking answers to research questions that concern human flourishing and social justice.

Our research strategy

Our research strategy identifies five impact areas where we are working to make a lasting difference:

Connected communities.
During the pandemic, marginalised communities have experienced disproportionate and rising levels of loss, illness, mental health difficulties and poverty.  Our co-creative research offers opportunities for individual and collective story telling through the arts, in order to enable communities and individuals to build new connections and strengthen networks which will enable renewal.

Positive youth transitions.
Rising unemployment and mental health difficulties among marginalised young people has increased during the pandemic.  Our research, co-developed with young people, supports positive destinations for young people by generating policy and practice relevant findings, while also giving participants research experience and opportunities to learn new skills and gain qualifications.

Health inequalities and wellbeing.
Physical and mental health and overall wellbeing is declining in some communities in Scotland. Our research enables understanding of the reasons for some of these health inequalities and informs policies and practices which can alleviate these.

Methodological and theoretical innovation.
The work of the Binks Hub is leading methodological and theoretical innovations in arts-engaged participatory research.
